Multiple Sclerosis Imaging

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common but severe central nervous system disorder that affects primarily young productive adults. Over 50,000 Canadians have MS. The cost of MS to Canadian society is estimated to be $ 1 billion annually. There is no cure. MR imaging has become an important tool for the diagnosis and management of the disease. MS research at 3T has been comprehensive ranging from natural history studies, patient – control comparisons, to clinical trials. The goal is to better understand the mechanisms of MS; to develop novel outcome measures or MS models to evaluate repair; and to assess the impact of candidate interventions on MR imaging outcomes. These promising studies should accelerate the discovery of new therapies for MS.
